Welcome!

Dear Parent,

I want to thank you for considering our tutoring program for your  needs.

I am an Elementary School teacher with Master Degree in Elementary Education.  I have a current Elementary teaching license and Bachelor in Childhood Education and Psychology which I completed on May of 2013.

I firmly believe that teaching is one of my gifts and has become a core passion in life.

My role as a tutor goes far beyond helping with homework. I work with elementary aged children helping them become thinkers: better readers, writers and mathematicians. I initially assess and evaluate students’ strengths and weaknesses in regard to decoding, reading comprehension, math and spelling knowledge.  I then design lessons specific to each student. My experiences include working with children as young as 3 years old assessing them to determine their strength, and identify where I need to provide more instruction. Determining goals and writing a plan to achieve these goals.

Your child can be an honor roll student too! Sometimes, school work is tough, but with a little help your child really can accomplish great things.  Do not let you kid be behind!

  MY EDUCATION:

* Master degree in Elementary Education and ESL

* Bachelor degree in Psychology

*Experience in NYC Public School

* Experience with Wilson Reading Foundations

* Certificate in elementary math

* Experience with home schooling pre-k and kindergartners. Teaching them how to read, write and math foundation.

* Experience with elementary Common Core Curriculum

* Work with 3rd-5th graders in preparing them for the Common Core state test for ELA and Math.
- 95% of my students have achieved passing scores.

* Working with first graders (students achieved 90% proficiency in Terra Nova Language, Reading, and Math State Test).

I want each student to feel that he or she is important by providing opportunities to show independence. After all my job is to teach them to help themselves.

The following is a summary of what I do in my classroom:

- Establish multi-sensory, hands-on learning environments encouraging risk-taking, experimentation, and critical thinking where children are encouraged to be both independent and dependable
- Planning daily Reading Workshops incorporating read-alouds, guided reading, word study, and independent reading with individualized reading goals
- Facilitating Writing Workshops based on literature immersion, keeping a writer’s notebook and publishing cycles
- Utilizing a balanced approach to Mathematics allowing students to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts and skills using non-routine, real-world tasks which incorporate a variety of mathematical strands
- Planning integrated, experience-based social studies/ science curricula responsive to children’s developmental interests that emphasizes the interconnections of the human and natural world
- Collecting and analyzing data from a variety of student assessments to increase student achievement and enhance professional practice

READING

When a student lacks reading skills, he or she suffers in all academic subjects. Students need reading skills to understand their history and science textbooks, test instructions, and literary stories.

Strong reading skills are vital for success in careers as well. Whether they are reading a news story or following written instructions, productive citizens must have good reading skills.

Reading skills range from sounding out a word to forming an opinion about a story. Bright Horizon Learning Center evaluation identifies a student's weak skills. The teacher then develops an individualized program that builds these skills before progressing to the next skill level.

My reading programs work on the following skills in lessons designed for

Elementary School,

  • Letter formation

 WRITING

Writing skills reveal a lot about a person. People are constantly communicating through e-mail messages, letters, essays, and reports. These written pieces need to convey ideas effectively, concisely, and with proper grammar and usage conventions.

Students must first be able to decide what they want to say. Then they must work through the writing and editing process to communicate ideas that meet their goals.

Bright Horizon Learning Center evaluation identifies a student's weak skills. The teacher then develops an individualized program that builds these skills before progressing to the next skill level.

Elementary School,

  • Grammar

  • Punctuation

  • Capitalization

  • Sentence writing

  • Paragraph writing

 Middle School,

  • Grammar

  • Punctuation

  • Usage

  • Writing process

  • Writing style

  • Writing test essays

  • Writing reports

  • SPELLING

  • Strong spelling skills help students become better readers and writers. Weak spelling skills leave a bad impression in everything from e-mail messages and school reports to on-the-job communications.

  • Bright Horizon Learning Center evaluation identifies a student's weak skills. The teacher then develops an individualized program that builds these skills before progressing to the next skill level.

  • VOCABULARY

  •  Students who build their vocabulary become better readers and writers. As readers, they do not stumble over unfamiliar words. As writers, they can choose specific words that express exactly what they want to say. Furthermore, knowledge of higher-level vocabulary words is important to a high score on the SAT*.

  • Bright Horizon 's academic evaluation identifies a student's weak skills. Instructors then develop an individualized program that builds these skills before progressing to the next skill level. Step-by-step, students build a powerful vocabulary that they can use for the rest of their lives.

  • Bright Horizon 's vocabulary programs work on the following skills for Elementary School & Middle School.

 MATH

  •  If a student falls behind in math skills, it can snowball into an academic crisis. Math skills build from one level to another. For example, if a student cannot grasp division, he will not be able to keep up with the lessons on fractions.

  • Math skills are part of everyday life - from shopping and banking to building and cooking. Failure to understand math concepts and when to use them can lead to mistakes, frustration, and embarrassment.

  • Bright Horizon 's academic evaluation identifies a student's weak skills. Instructors then develop an individualized program that builds these skills before progressing to the next skill level.

        PHONICS

Phonics is one of the most important building blocks for reading. Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds. Without an understanding of phonics, reading may not occur.

At the earliest ages, children pick up the meaning of spoken words. As children start to read, they must learn that letters represent sounds in words. For example, the letters D-O-G represent "dog." As readers encounter new words, they decode the words by using their knowledge of phonics. Research shows that phonics instruction has a powerful impact on reading ability.

Bright Horizon 's academic evaluation identifies a student's weak skills. Instructors then develop an individualized program that builds these skills before progressing to the next skill level.

At Bright Horizon , teachers assure that students understand these vital features of Phonetic Analysis:

  • Letter recognition

  • Consonants (e.g. B, C, D, F)

  • Vowels (e.g. A, E, I, O, U)

  • Digraphs (e.g. OA in boat)

  • Diphthongs (e.g. OY in toy)

  • Blends (e.g. SL in slip)

 ACT* PREP

The ACT is one of the more demanding tests you will ever take. It can determine if you get into the college of your choice. With the right scores, you may be eligible for a scholarship.

The ACT consists of four sections and is offered each school year in September, October, December, February, April, and June. Most take it in the spring of their junior year. Some repeat the exam in the fall of their senior year. Those who realize its importance begin taking it in sophomore or even freshman year.

Bright Horizon prepares you for its demands, including test-taking strategies, time-management, and academic knowledge using 1-1 instruction to give you the Great Advantage. Most attend four to six hours per week or more, plus homework time.

STATE & STANDARDIZED TEST PREP

NY State and local school districts have instituted standardized assessments for various grade levels. These are often high stakes exams, where your child's school progress may depend on his or her results. Some states require your child pass the test in order to be promoted to the next grade. Huntington can help your child excel on these state tests.

Using our great education, tutoring experience and test prep expertise, Bright Horizon can help your child perform to his or her full potential. Our tutors will make sure your child understands key concepts as well as test-taking strategies.
